I attended the classiest event of the year.

First, a question ??
How many attended this year's event??? Well I was at the AccessKenya Africa Concours d’Elegance and let's just say it was blast. Being IT savvy I had bought my tickets online. There was an incredible residential internet offer from Access@Home Brand.

At the event a 1928 Ford Model was declared the overall car winner. Second place went to a1977 Nissan 160J which has won three times in the past. There was a tie for third place between a1934 Railton sports car and the 1967 Alfa Romeo Sprint. A 1959 BMW R27 was the overall motorcycle winner.

I was at the judging line to watch the assessment of the sports cars and machines made before 1940. Stuart Allison who of Athi River contested the Concours in his 1959 MGA which won the event 21 years ago. In this year’s vehicle beauty contest his flame red classic open two seater was awarded first place in the up to 1,600 cc sports car class.

I had predicted that the overall winner would emerge from the pre-1940 class. This proved me correct when the 1928 Ford Tudor was declared both the class and best car. The 1934 Railton was the runner up in the class and earned the third overall prize behind the gleaming white Nissan 160J.

The day ended with the Starehe Boys Centre band leading the parade of Concours cars and motorcycles with the Uganda Bikers Association riders heading the cavalcade. This was followed by the Grand Finale presented by the Safari Cats with their dazzling costumes, exciting dance routines to vibrant music and a series of acrobatic displays.

Do you want a new or used car

I'm often asked what I'd recommend? I don't think there is a certain car new or used that is just perfect for everyone. It really depends on what exactly you expecting from your next vehicle and how much money you want to spend. By purchasing a used car, you can save a lot of money. A new car depreciates quickly in the first few years and after 3 years, it is worth only about 60-70% of the original price. In fact, as soon as you leave the dealership, your new vehicle is suddenly worth 10% less, a new car requires less maintenance in first few years and most of the problems occurred within the original warranty coverage period will be covered by the car manufacturer.

Buying a new car does not always mean the buyer will get perfection. A new car may come with problems associated with poor design or manufacturing defects that may have been already repaired during the warranty coverage period if it's a used car. The same is true for all kinds of recalls and service campaigns.
Buying a used car is still a bit of a gamble - there is no guarantee that the car is accident-free, has real mileage, and was properly maintained. There may be some hidden problems like a worn out automatic transmission, or engine problems that may not have been obvious when you test-drove the car.

Here are some tips I want to share:

Safety

There is no perfectly safe car, but certain models can protect you better in case of a crash. Some vehicles offer features that may help you to avoid an accident in the first place. You can compare crash test ratings and find other car safety related information online.

Reliability

Reliability is one of the most important factors to consider. Not all cars are the same. Some models are proven to be very reliable, others are known for constant problems. There is a number of resources where you can check reliability ratings of car models.

Fuel economy

With unpredictable gas prices, choosing the more fuel-efficient vehicle will help you to save money at the pump. Fuel-efficient cars pollute less, which is good for the environment. By choosing a more economical vehicle you are helping to fight global warming.

Depreciation
Some cars hold value well, while others depreciate very quickly. If you want to keep your car only for a few years and then trade it in, consider a model that will not drop in value too quickly over your ownership period.

Automatic or manual transmission

It is much easier to drive a car with an automatic transmission. An automatic transmission offers more convenience, but it involves a more complicated device and breaks more often. The repair of an automatic transmission tends to be quite expensive. When you buy a used car, the automatic transmission is one of the important parts to check - How to check a transmission

Cars with manual transmission are less expensive. A manual transmission is often more reliable than an automatic. Experienced drivers of manual transmissions will tell you they like how it allows the driver to feel "closer" to the car. It's just more fun! However, it is more hassle to drive a car with manual transmission, especially in a stop-and-go traffic. It also could be challenging to handle for a beginner. But don't be scared, it's not as difficult as it seems - many learn it pretty quickly. You also can save on gas - cars with manual transmission are more economical. A manual transmission gives you more control over gear shifting, and therefore more possibilities for adopting fuel-efficient drive style.

Considering a car with Diesel engine

Cars with a diesel engine consume almost half as much fuel as the same car with a gasoline engine. However, there is a price to pay: Diesel engines are a bit noisier and there always will be that not very pleasant smell from the exhaust. Some Diesel engine vehicles require only synthetic oil which means higher maintenance cost.

Four-cylinder or six

Four-cylinder engines usually provide better fuel economy, but V6 and V8 engines generally have more power and little more durability. The V6 (or V8) engine will be a good choice if you want to use your car for towing a trailer. For normal city driving, a four-cylinder engine will do the job just fine.

Do I need the ABS?

The four-wheel ABS or Anti-lock Braking System is designed to help the driver maintain steering control during hard braking, especially in slippery conditions. Driving a car equipped with four-wheel ABS, it would be easier for you to steer your vehicle while braking. If slippery road conditions are common in your area, the ABS may be helpful if you use it correctly. The disadvantage is that the ABS is quite complicated device and might be costly to repair.

Basic Car Maintenance Tips

I received a requests to provide some very simple car maintenance tips. So here we go...

The information contained in this post is for educational purposes only and cannot substitute for the advice of professional mechanic or authorized dealer. I've tried to describe some of the car maintenance tasks in a very simple, easy to understand manner. I covered only few basic items. Don't attempt to service your car if you don't have proper knowledge and tools, you can be injured and your vehicle could be damaged.

 Few basic car maintenance tips

• Regular oil changes are very important to keep your engine in a good shape.
• Wash your car regularly, wax it once in a while to keep the car body shiny and free from corrosion.
• Take care of any minor concerns, so it won't cause serious problems and an expensive repair later.
• Use only original parts.

How to check the engine oil

Place your car at the level spot. Stop the engine. Wait for a while to let the engine oil to pour down to the oil pan. Pull
the engine oil dipstick. Check the oil level. Check the oil condition: If it's way too black, it's definitely time to change it. If it's slightly-brown, it's O.K. If it's dark-brown, but still transparent, it's admissible but it's better to change it soon. If it's white (coffee with milk color) it means the engine coolant mixes with the engine oil because of some internal engine problem, have your car inspected. It would be better to add the same type and brand of the engine oil as you already have in the engine. Add a little amount of the oil. Wait for a minute to let the oil to pour down. Check the oil level again with the dipstick. If it's still low, add some more. But don't overfill it. Don't forget to install the dipstick back and close the oil filler cap when you finished.

Check the tire pressure regularly

Check tire pressure at least once a month. You can find the recommended tire pressure  on the tire pressure placard (see photo), which might be located somewhere on the car (e.g. on the driver's door opening, inside the gas tank, inside the glove box). The maximum pressure listed on tires is NOT the proper pressure!
Rotate tires at every second oil change - it will insure all tires wear equally. Feel vibration at cruising speed? - have your tires balanced.  There is a safe limit of the tread wear. If the tire is worn below this limit it's unsafe to drive; your mechanic can check your tires for you. Uneven tire wear indicates alignment problem.
Improper alignment causes increased tire and suspension components wear and poor handling. In worst case, improper alignment may throw your car into a skid, especially on a wet or slippery road. If a car pulls aside, wanders or feels unstable on the road, have the alignment checked. Properly done alignment will make your car's ride a lot more enjoyable.

Engine coolant

Low coolant level will cause engine overheating, which may cause serious damage to the engine. How to check the engine coolant level: The coolant level should be between "LOW" and "FULL" marks in the coolant overflow tank as in the picture. If it's lower, top it up. If there is no coolant in overflow tank or you have to top it up quite often, have your car inspected in the garage, possibly there is a coolant leak.
Never open the radiator or coolant overflow tank when the engine is hot! When engine temperature is reduced (few minutes after the engine has been turned off) , simply add a coolant into the overflow tank to "FULL" mark.

Taking care of small concerns in time may save you a lot more

As soon as you feel there is something wrong with your car like any kind of irregular noise, vibration, shimmer, or you note some leak or any warning light comes on while driving or anything that seems to be irregular - have your car inspected at a dealer or a garage as soon as you can - it might be unsafe to drive. It's definitely better to check any small problem before it will cause something serious.

Regular mechanical inspection

For your safety, I recommend to have your car inspected regularly, at least once a year, by a mechanic. I mean not just visual inspection by one of the fast lube places, but a mechanic that can lift your car and check major components such as brakes, suspension, etc., while having your tires rotated, for example. This is because many components (e.g ball joints), can not be inspected visually.

Mitsubishi Outlander

Hot isn't a word one would often use for an SUV, but it's fitting for the Mitsubishi Outlander. The Mitsubishi Outlander has a stunnning exterior that looks like a design ahead of its time.  Seven-spoke 18 inch alloys look outstandinly awesome on the XLS Luxury model.  The chunky colour-coded door mirrors, rounded fog lamps, rear roof spoiler, silver roof rails, privacy glass, chrome exhaust extensions and tear-drop lines all add to the pleasing first impressions that one gets when drooling from outside this classy machine.  Open the solid driver's door and close it again, and a very reassuring clunk follows, again adding to the building impression of strength and durability that the big Outlander encompasses in its looks, design and engineering.

The Mitsubishi Outlander's interior is designed to provide comfort for those long drives and off-road jaunts.  With seating for up to seven, the Outlander's has plenty of room.  Leather seating is an option; however, the Non-Phenol Felt looks and feels just as well-dressed.  The seats are covered in either cloth, sports mesh or leather.  The Non-Phenol Felt  fabric reduces the formation of compounds on the material and reduces lingering odors.  The audio system is very nice, and integrates into the 8 inch LCD touch screen navigation system.

There is even a Bluetooth  phone integration system available.  Another well designed feature is the steering wheel mounted controls for not only the audio system but also the navigation system.
The Outlander is commendably designed, and is very useful off-road.  At the touch of a button, you can engage the 4-wheel drive system that transfers just the right amount of power to each wheel to ensure you have the best traction available.  Not only does the 4-wheel drive system help ensure your safety when the road conditions get bad, but the Outlander has both driver and passenger front airbags as well as roll-over and side curtain airbags.  The ABS anti-lock brakes help ensure you stop very quickly. The Outlander is a very safe vehicle, and boasts crumple zones and a collapsible steering column.

Packed with plenty of punch under the hood, the Outlander performs with lots of sparkle.  There are two engine options.  The most powerful is reserved for the VR models.  The long-awaited 3.0 litre V6 bristles with the latest in engine design and pumps out 162 kW of power.  The 276 Nm of torque gives a deep throaty response and loads of pulling power.  The 2.4 litre has 125 kW of power and feels swift in operation.  The options for transmissions are: a five speed manual gearbox on the base model, a CVT transmission version, and a silky six speed auto is linked to the V6 models.

The combination of power and modern technology make the Mitsubishi Outlander frugal on gas when travelling out on the open road.  The Outlander weighs over 1.5 tonnes and yet can hand back to the driver a class leading 32 km/litre city and 44 km/litre highway.
Don't miss adding this one to your shopping list.  Definitely worth a look.  The Mitsubishi Outlander is an SUV that contains all the bells and whistles that make driving fun, enjoyable and exciting.

Current model series include:
  • Mitsubishi Outlander ZG LS 2.4
  • Mitsubishi Outlander ZG VR 3.0
  • Mitsubishi Outlander ZG VRX 3.0

Subaru Forester

Sleek lines, peppy performance and the quality that Subaru is noted for ensures that potential buyers will not be disappointed. All this tradition has been moved forward into one of Subaru’s hottest selling vehicles, the 2008/9 Subaru Forester.

Subaru have made some very appealing exterior designs over the years and with the Forester, they have got the chunky design just right. The chunkiness gives the Forester an impression that the car is strong, fluent and powerful. Rounded edges are tasteful, and the headlight and taillight design looks very good. Hot looking alloys and lots of silver trim make the exterior utterly gorgeous.

Subaru have one of the most stylish interiors around with plenty of options like a 6-disc in dash CD changer with MP3.WMA player which is attached to a 7 speaker audio system with subwoofer, Sirius Satellite capabilities, dual stage heated front seats, panoramic sliding glass moon-roof, leather trimmed upholstery and an optional 8-way power adjustable driver's seat. The Forester also comes with power mirrors, electronically controlled cruise control and lots of storage throughout the vehicle. The dashboard is classic Subaru and tastefully refined. The Forester has been equipped with the same dash layout as the Impreza. So if you're going from the bachelor-boy coupe to the family-man Forester SUV, you won't notice the difference - well, not much anyway! The 2008/9 Subaru Forester offers extra cabin space for all five seats. If you're doing carpool duty for the rugby team, even the lankiest locks will be comfy in the back seat. The Forester comes in five different alternative packages: the Forester X, the XS, the XS Premium, the XT and the XT Premium.

The Subaru Forester's grippy handling comes from the Subaru tradition. The all-wheel-drive system that transfers power where needed to supply the best traction. It's all automatic and on-guard all of the time.

Safety is top priority for the Subaru Forester with their Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system, anti-lock brakes with Brake Force Distribution, daytime running lights, dual stage driver and passenger front and side airbags and much more. Their enviable five star crash test rating is exemplary.

From the powerhouse perspective, the basic difference between these models is that the X, the XS and the XS Premium are fitted with a 2.5 litre SOHC powerhouse (126 kW of power at 6000, 229 Nm of torque at 4400 rpm), while the XT and XT Premiums carry a DOHC turbo boxer unit that pumps out 169 kW of power at 5200 rpm and a very respectable 320 Nm of twist at a low 2800 rpm. Either engine type makes for very nippy acceleration. In turbo form, this SUV can move it! You also have the choice of either a manual gearbox or 4-speed automatic - depending on your driving tastes.

Premium build quality, reliability and performance make the Subaru Forester a roomy contender for the SUV bracket. Give the Subaru Forester a test ride today and see for yourself why a Subaru is the right vehicle for you.

Nissan X-Trail

Building on the huge success of the first generation of X-Trail vehicles, Nissan has taken the next step by improving performance, comfort, convenience and most importantly, lower fuel consumption and emission output. As a design goes, the new Nissan X-Trail speaks for itself. The exterior has nice lines, and previous owners rave about its practicality, ease of use and performance.

The X-Trail has been completely restyled and has a robust, strong shape similar to its predecessor. They've also beefed up the exterior by extending the wheel arches and toughening the grille. Nissan have also used a deep D-pillar behind the profile of the rearmost side window. All of these features can be found across Nissan's 4x4 line.
The interior is nothing to scoff at either. The use of soft feeling materials in places commonly touched and premium-grade quality grained plastics offer style aplenty. A nice touch is the flocked surfaces in different colour shades throughout the cockpit area. You can even get trimming in silver or titanium colors to give that "techie" look if desired. Riding inside the new X-Trail is a true pleasure.

The well designed console and dash are angled to make access to switch-gear quick and simple. And the interior is packed with modern items such as cooling/warming drink holders, a CD-player, folding rear seats, and a removable and washable rear luggage board. Storage compartments througout the interior are many in number, and are tucked away in handy places. A unique and handy storage drawer slides out from below the raised rear cargo floor. There are two 12-volt power outlets: one that doubles as a cigarette lighter, while the other is located in the rear cargo area.

Standard on the Ti and TL models is a sunroof which adds to the already sunny and light cabin. An onboard computer displays up-to-date info on the vehicle's progress.
The new Nissan X-Trail has an upgraded ALL MODE 4x4 system. This means that uphill and downhill support activates on inclines greater than 10%. The mechanism holds the vehicle on the brakes until the driver starts to move away. DDS (Downhill Drive Support) works off a switch on the centre console and uses the anti-lock brakes to maintain a decent speed of 7km/h. When DDS kicks in, the driver concentrates on steering the vehicle.

The new Nissan X-Trail is slightly larger than its predecessor. Its wheelbase increased by 5mm, and the overall length of the vehicle also increased by 175mm. Two highly acclaimed diesel engines and a powerful 4-cylinder petrol motor offer smooth and elastic performance, ranging from between 110 kW and 127 kW. The X-trail feels peppy and fuel consumption is good. Improved on-road dynamics make for balanced and grippy handling.
Certainly the Nissan X-Trail is a fantastic all-around family vehicle with the capacity for some good, if not serious, off-road ability. A pleasurable drive.

Current model series include:
  • Nissan X-Trail ST
  • Nissan X-Trail ST-S
  • Nissan X-Trail Ti
  • Nissan X-Trail Ti-L

If Cars Were Like Computers

At a recent computer exposition, Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry and stated: "If General Motors had kept up with the technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25.00 cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon."

In response to Bill's comments, GM issued a press release stating: "If General Motors had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics:
  1. For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash twice a day.
  2. Every time they repainted the lines in the road, you would have to buy a new car.
  3. Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason. 4.You would have to pull over to the side of the road, close all of the windows, shut off the car, restart it, and reopen the windows before you could continue. For some reason, you would simply accept this.
  4. Occasionally, executing a maneuver such as a left turn would cause your car to shut down and refuse to restart, in which case you would have to reinstall the engine.
  5. Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, was reliable, five times as fast and twice as easy to drive -- but would run on only five percent of the roads.
  6. The oil, water temperature, and alternator warning lights would all be replaced by a single "General Protection Fault" warning light.
  7. The airbag system would ask "Are you sure?" before deploying.
  8. Occasionally, for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you out and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned the key and grabbed hold of the radio antenna.
  9. Every time GM introduced a new car, car buyers would have to learn to drive all over again because none of the controls would operate in the same manner as the old car.
  10. You'd have to press the "Start" button to turn the engine off.

Toyota Rav4

The Toyota RAV4 is in its third generation now, and is only getting better and better as each generation goes by. The first generation was from 1994 to 2000. The second was from 2001 to 2005. And the third, and current generation, started in 2006.

The third-generation RAV4 has loads of style, and it always looks solid and pleasant on the eye from any position you care to gaze at the vehicle from. The nose is nicely sculptured and the headlights are wide-eyed and purposeful. A high waistline gives the RAV4 a robust and muscley look that is accentuated with its wide 17 inch wheels and flared wheel arches. I like a vehicle that has hot looks and a sporty appearance.

The Rav4 is a vehicle that not only looks tough; it has has the credentials to tackle slippery conditions and plenty of off-roading jaunts. The electronically controlled AWD system is designed to help prevent the vehicle slipping sideways during steep off-road hill descents. It provides “feet off” driving down a steep incline. The latest AWD system was developed by Toyota to provide enhanced control and improved fuel economy.

Toyota Active AWD is a compact system that controls torque distribution between the front and rear axles. It achieves this by using a newly developed electromagnetic coupling in the rear differential housing. The electronically controlled Active AWD system saves engine power and fuel by only driving the front wheels. It switches automatically to all-wheel drive when needed.

This fantastic technology is complimented with Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) - standard on all models except the CV, Active Braking with intelligence (AB-i) - incorporating an Anti-skid Braking System (ABS) with EBD & BA, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control (TRC) - standard on all models except the CV. With this level of AWD traction, the Toyota Rav4 is a class leader.

All Toyota RAV4 models are blessed with dual front SRS airbags, air conditioning that boasts a dust filter, 17" wheels, cruise control, a tilt & telescopic steering column adjustment, central locking & keyless entry, a 6 speaker MP3-compatible CD sound system with an audio input jack, an engine immobiliser and a Toyota Safe-T Cell. These are top rate features that make the RAV4 the leader of the light 4WD, soft roader bracket.

Toyota has provided many RAV4 models. The Cruiser versions add a little more features and luxury. The Cruiser L is the luxury packed model. The CV6, SX6 and ZR6 models are all well endowed with luxury items, and they boast the very powerful 3.5 litre V6 petrol motor that pumps out 201 kW and a whopping 333 Nm of torque. The CV, Cruiser and Cruiser L models have the responsive 2.4 litre petrol engine which has a maximum power output of 125 kW and 224 Nm.

The CV model provides affordable comfort and performance. It comes with a 5 speed manual or 4 speed automatic gearbox. The RAV4 Cruiser provides quality & handling beyond its class. It comes with a 5 speed manual or 4 speed automatic gearbox. Along with the standard features, the Cruiser also contains some extra features such as: front fog lamps, 17" six-spoke alloy wheels, roof rails, overfender flares, Downhill Assist Control (DAC) [Automatic transmission models only], Hill-start Assist Control (HAC), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRC) and an electric moonroof (optional).

The Cruiser L is the model in the Toyota RAV4 range that provides the ultimate blend of versatility and quality. It comes with a 5 speed manual or 4 speed automatic gearbox. The Cruiser L also contains the standard RAV4 features while also containing the following: power driver's seat adjustment including lumbar support, and a heated driver and front-passenger seat. The CV6, SX6 and ZR6 not only boast the V6 engine, but they are all superbly equipped vehicles. Leather seats are available; so to is a Sat-Nav system and a premium sound system.

You will be comfortable in any Toyota RAV4 model. The seats provide good support for long journeys. The space inside the cabin is excellent, and there are lots of storage compartments throughout the cabin. To drive, the Toyota RAV4 is a very composed vehicle whatever the terrain. You will enjoy the solid feel, engine response and refinement - not to mention Toyota’s bullet-proof reliability.

The extremely well engineered Toyota RAV4 is just the right size to get the chores done around town. It remains rugged enough to have plenty of outdoor fun off the beaten track.

Head on down and take a look. The RAV4 should be on the top of your test drive lists.

Current model series include:

  • Toyota RAV4 Cruiser 2.4
  • Toyota RAV4 Cruiser L 2.4
  • Toyota RAV4 CV 2.4
  • Toyota RAV4 CV6

Not to mention, it saves you the time and aggravation spent trawling the car yards.  Here we have put together car reviews on each and every one of the car models available in Kenya. These car reviews will be regularly updated as new models become available.

We welcome any suggestions on how to improve and build on this resource. So, if you have decided on your next car or if you have any feedback regarding the reviews. Email us tagcars@live.com
